We all love taking our dogs for a walk, but when temperatures rise, it’s important to think twice before heading out. Hot weather can be dangerous for dogs, leading to heatstroke, burned paw pads, and serious health risks. Here’s why you should avoid walking your dog in the heat and how to keep them safe during warmer months.
1. Dogs Overheat Faster Than Humans
Unlike us, dogs don’t sweat the same way to regulate their body temperature. They cool down mainly through panting, which isn’t always enough in extreme heat. A dog’s body temperature can rise quickly, leading to heatstroke—a life-threatening condition that requires emergency care.
Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs:
🔥 Excessive panting or drooling
🔥 Lethargy or weakness
🔥 Vomiting or diarrhea
🔥 Bright red gums or tongue
🔥 Collapsing or unresponsiveness
If you notice any of these signs, get your dog into a cool area immediately and contact a vet.
2. Hot Pavement Can Burn Their Paws
On a hot day, asphalt, concrete, and sand can become dangerously hot. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws! Burns on paw pads can be painful and may take weeks to heal.
💡 Tip: Walk your dog on grass or dirt instead of pavement, and always check the ground temperature before heading out.
3. Short-Nosed Breeds Struggle Even More
Breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Frenchies have shorter snouts, making it harder for them to breathe and regulate heat. These dogs are at an even higher risk of overheating and should be kept indoors during hot weather.
4. Older Dogs & Puppies Are More Vulnerable
Senior dogs, puppies, and dogs with health conditions are more sensitive to heat. They may struggle to cool down and are more prone to dehydration. It’s best to keep them inside and ensure they have plenty of fresh water.
5. Overheating Can Happen Even in the Shade
Even if you’re walking in a shaded area, the humidity and high temperatures can still be too much for your dog. Heat exhaustion can happen quickly, even on cloudy days.
How to Keep Your Dog Safe in the Heat:
🐾 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler
🐾 Keep walks short and bring water
🐾 Avoid hot pavement—stick to grass or shaded trails
🐾 Provide plenty of fresh water and a cool place to rest
🐾 Consider cooling vests or mats to help keep your pup comfortable
